Summer Sunburns, Insect bites, and Sun Screen
It’s now mid-spring. For those of us in the western United States, we are starting to think about summertime weather. A summertime sunburn will tend to start happening to those that don’t take precaution. When people start to make plans to travel to places that require a swimsuit. They tend to get a little crispy from the sun if protection isn’t applied. In today’s post, we are discussing how to soothe sunburns with natural essential oils.
I’ve noticed over the course of my life, all the chemicals that manufacturers put into their products to either
A) get you hooked on their product, or
B) change the look of their product so that you are enticed to buying it again. I believe that what people really want is a solution that isn’t going to hurt them and will give them more benefit than a hindrance.
You’re probably asking yourself, “Why are you telling me this, Jon?”
Well, here’s my story.
…and I’ll keep it short and to the point, so you know you CAN use essential oils to soothe sunburns
Yesterday, I decided to build a fence and use it as a dog run for my 2 dogs. What I didn’t think about was that the weather was really nice outside and I was wearing a tank-top. I figured, that it was going to be all right. Since I was going inside and outside all throughout the day. It was one of those days…
“I’m getting hot/tired and need to go inside to get some water or something-to-drink” kind of days.
So I woke up the next day with a bit of a sunburn. I couldn’t find any traditional sunburn ointment. So I tried to figure out what I could do with the pure essential oils. There is a book that I use to figure out different methods of treating various ailments, called “Modern Essentials. A Contemporary Guide To The Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils”. Upon looking up the use of oils on sunburns, I noticed that I could use an oil called “Lavender“. You might have heard of this essential oil before. Because it does so much more than just help you with your sunburn.
The other issue I have had this “pre-summer” is getting bit by mosquitos. I have been told is a direct relation to the amount of sugar in your bloodstream. Mosquitos love blood and especially sweet-smelling blood.
Diabetics need to pay close attention to this as they may be getting bitten due to high blood sugars.
Sunburns, bites, and anything that affects the skin can also be affecting your nervous system. Essential oils can be very effective when you know how to use them to proactively keep your body healthy.
Uses of Lavender Oil To Soothe Sunburns
What I discovered about this essential oil, is that it will do several things for you. Things like…
- Get to sleep at night
- Calm your nerves
- Healing your skin
- Help with any sort of topical pain
Here’s what I did to my skin which would soothe my sunburn (which works really well!!)
Put 10 drops of Lavender in a 4-ounce misting spray bottle filled with distilled water. Shake it up, and spray on location to aid with removing the pain of the sunburn. This will also speed up the healing process. This recipe will not only be cheaper for you but it is ALL NATURAL.
The other amazing thing that I found out. I could just put a drop of Lavender essential oil on my mosquito bites to reduce the itching. The brain will then relax because the lavender essential oil will mask the itching (pain). The other oil you can use for both the mosquito bites and sunburns is Helichrysum. This is an essential oil that costs much more than the others. However, it does an amazing job for use to soothe sunburns.
This book I have (which you can also buy for your use) says that Lavender “may help relieve pain and inflammation.”“Lavender essential oil is an antispasmodic and may help with migraine headaches and tension.” Click To Tweet
