Summer Sunburns, Insect bites, and Sun Screen
It’s now mid-spring and for those of us in the western United States, we are starting to think about summertime weather. A summertime sunburn will tend to start happening to those that don’t take precaution. When people start to make plans to travel to places that require a bathing suit or you are just plain hot from wearing all those winter clothes outside – you need to change your wardrobe for the more air-conditioned set of clothes.
I’ve noticed over the course of my life, all the chemicals that manufacturers put into their products to either A) get you hooked on their product, or B) change the look of their product so that you are enticed to buying it again. I believe that what people really want is a solution that isn’t going to hurt them and will give them more benefit than a hindrance.
You’re probably asking yourself, “Why are you telling me this, Jon?”
Well, here’s my story — and I’ll keep it short and to the point.
Yesterday, I decided to build a fence and use it as a dog run for my 2 dogs. What I didn’t think about was that the weather was really nice outside and I was wearing a tank-top. I figured, that it was going to be all right since I was going inside and outside all throughout the day. It was one of those “I’m getting hot/tired and need to go inside to get some water or something-to-drink” kind of days.
So I woke up the next day with a bit of a sunburn and I couldn’t find any traditional sunburn ointment, so I tried to figure out what I could do with the pure oils that I have. There is a book that I use to figure out different methods of treating various ailments, called “Modern Essentials — A Contemporary Guide To The Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils”. Upon my looking up the use of oils on sunburns, I noticed that I could use an oil called “Lavender“. You might have heard of this oil before and it does so much more than just help you with your sunburn.
The other issue I have had this “pre-summer” is getting bit by mosquitos – which I have been told is a direct relation to the amount of sugar in your bloodstream. Mosquitos love blood and especially sweet-smelling blood.
Sunburns, bites and anything that affects the skin can also be affecting your nervous system. Essential oils can be very effective when you know how to use them to proactively keep your body healthy.
Uses of Lavender Oil For Sun Burns
What I discovered about this oil, is that it will do several things for you. From helping you get to sleep at night, to calming your nerves, to healing your skin, to helping you with any sort of topical pain you may be having.
Here’s what I did for my sunburn (which works really well!!)
Put 10 drops of Lavender in a 4-ounce misting spray bottle filled with distilled water. Shake it up, and spray on location to aid with the pain of the sunburn and speed up the healing process. This recipe will not only be cheaper for you but it is ALL NATURAL.
The other amazing thing that I found out was that I could just put a drop of Lavender oil on my mosquito bites to reduce the itching (which the brain thinks is the pain). The other oil you can use for both the mosquito bites and sunburns is Helichrysum – which is a great oil for use as a sunscreen. I plan on doing a post on this oil as too, as this is also an amazing oil with many healing properties.
This book I have (which you can also buy for your use) says that Lavender “may help relieve pain and inflammation. It is an antispasmodic and may help with migraine headaches and tension.” I think this is one oil that I’m going to stock up on. The uses seem to be more than most of us even realized.
There are many more uses for Lavender oil but if you do decide to use the oil as a treatment for an ailment, it is important that you use Certified Pure Therapeutic grade oils (CPTG). I found that this company has the best oils and they actually test every batch of oils for the level of purity. So, if you wanted the best quality oil, you would have to go to different parts of the world. DōTerra did just that!
If you are tired of being told to take a pill and that there is no answer to your ailments, that the flu cannot be eradicated or , you would just like a natural way to Soothe Sunburns With Natural Essential Oils. You definitely need to look into getting some CPTG Oils from DōTerra. These certified pure, therapeutic grade essential oils work wonders for me both on my body and in the kitchen with my food!
Have a great SUMMER…
